Introduction:

Dravyaguna Vigyana is the branch of Ayurveda that deals with the detailed study of medicinal plants and their properties, actions, and therapeutic uses. It is considered the Ayurvedic equivalent of Pharmacology and Materia Medica in modern medicine.

The subject covers identification, classification, collection, preservation, and application of medicinal herbs, along with their effects on Dosha, Dhatu, and Mala. Students learn both classical Ayurvedic principles and modern botanical/pharmacological perspectives. Through Dravyaguna, one gains knowledge of how natural substances act on the human body and how they can be used in prevention and treatment of diseases.

Facilities in the Department:

  • Herbal Garden – Maintained with a wide variety of medicinal plants for practical identification and learning.

  • Department Library – Enriched with classical Ayurvedic texts, Nighantus (materia medica), and modern reference books on pharmacology and botany.

  • Pharmacognosy Laboratory – Equipped for microscopic and macroscopic study of raw drugs, powders, and herbal samples.

  • Department Museum – Displays raw drug samples, preserved specimens, charts, and models related to medicinal plants and their properties.

  • Demonstration Room – With audio-visual aids for interactive lectures, seminars, and practical demonstrations.
